The Story

The owners and founders of Tags, Mauricio Santillán and Abiff Ortiz, both industrial designers and friends from university, founded their own company and now produce traditional espadrilles in amazing motifs.

The colorful shoes are handmade by local Mayan families. Their main product is the classic espadrilles in traditional Mayan style and all kinds of imaginative, trendy designs. They are made in over 130 different colors and attractive patterns. Espadrilles for adults and children, sandals and even light boots can be found in the collection. All materials come from carefully selected sources and the shoes are made by the talented Palomar shoemaking family from Hunucmá, Yucatán.

FAQs

What are Alpargatas?

Alpargatas are traditional Spanish shoes that are often equated with espadrilles. Alpargatas are typically flat and have a flexible sole, making them comfortable casual shoes. Alpargatas have a long history and are common in many countries around the Mediterranean, particularly Spain, France, Latin America and other parts of Southern Europe.

How do I find the right size?

Measure your foot length and check the size chart. The sole can be 1 cm longer. Also check the width (measured at the widest point).

Why don't the Tags Espadrilles have a straw sole?

The problem with the straw sole is that it often doesn't hold together for as long, and it doesn't tolerate moisture. And especially not washing. The Tags Espadrilles have a real shoe sole, with an inner sole and a rubberized outsole, so it's no problem at all if they get wet, they can even be washed in the washing machine!

Does the fabric stretch over time?

A little, but not too much. The sturdy hems and double fabric mean that the top stretches a little, but doesn't stretch out.

Why does Tags use polyester fabric and not cotton?

There are several advantages to using polyester fabrics in fabric shoes compared to cotton:

Water resistance:

Polyester is generally more water-resistant than cotton. This means that fabric shoes made from polyester are less susceptible to water damage and can better protect against moisture.

Quick-drying:

As mentioned above, polyester dries faster than cotton. Therefore, fabric shoes made of polyester can dry faster after contact with moisture, reducing the risk of mold growth or unpleasant odors.

Durability:

Polyester is generally tougher and more resistant to wear and tear than cotton. This means that fabric shoes made from polyester can last longer and are less prone to tears, holes or fraying.

Ease:

Polyester is a lightweight material, which helps make canvas shoes made from this material less heavy and bulky. This can improve comfort, especially in shoes that are worn for long periods of time.

Ease of care:

Polyester fabrics are often easier to care for than cotton and are easier to clean. They are less likely to absorb stains and can usually be washed in the washing machine without any problems.

Color brilliance:

Polyester fibers absorb dyes better than cotton. This means that printed polyester fabrics can often have more vibrant and durable coloring that will hold up even after multiple washes. This makes them ideal for fabric shoes with eye-catching or complex designs.

Pressure definition:

Polyester fabrics have a smoother surface than cotton, which helps prints to be clearer and more detailed. Fine details and lines can be better represented on polyester fabrics, resulting in an overall higher quality look to the print.

Color fastness:

Polyester fabrics are often more resistant to fading and bleaching from exposure to sunlight or washing compared to cotton. This means that the colors of the print on polyester fabrics last longer and are less prone to loss of vibrancy.

These benefits make polyester fabrics a popular choice in fabric shoes, especially for outdoor activities or conditions that require increased durability and moisture resistance.

Why are some soles sewn and some not?

In the workshop they simply have different processes and some still sew the outsole and some don't. But all soles are glued and hold rock solid, regardless of whether they are sewn or not.

Does the seam on the outsole come apart over time?

Yes, the seam will come undone here and there after a lot of walking, but it is not a defect or a problem because the outsoles are also glued and will still hold.
