Sustainability with Tags
Sustainability is a broad term that is often spontaneously associated with ecological aspects. But at Tags we define sustainability differently: For us, it primarily means longevity and the preservation of tradition, craftsmanship and culture.
Our choice of materials is conscious and well thought out - every material we use has its purpose and justification. Instead of focusing on short-term trends, we create products that are both high-quality and durable, while also carrying a deeper meaning.
Our approach: rethinking sustainability
-
Longevity as the core of sustainability
We focus on products that don't need to be replaced all the time. Our espadrilles are robust, washable and designed to last for years. -
preservation of crafts and culture
Our espadrilles are made in Mexico by artisans who master a craft that is in danger of extinction. By supporting their work, we help preserve cultural heritage and centuries-old techniques. -
Conscious choice of materials
- Robust and easy to care for : We use polyester instead of cotton because it is more durable and can withstand everyday use better.
- Washability : Our genuine shoe soles ensure that the espadrilles are not only comfortable but also easy to care for.
- Natural rubber : We are working to find a viable solution for the use of natural rubber – including reasonable, local access.
-
packaging with added value
- We avoid unnecessary packaging in stores. Instead, we use a colorful hair tie as a label that can be reused after purchase.
- For shipping, we use space-saving paper-based packaging, complemented by a minimalist plastic shipping bag that offers maximum protection.

Tags 2 Tote : Reuse and return
With our Tags 2 Tote program, we take back old Tags shoes and recycle the fabric. Together with fabric scraps from production, we transform these materials into useful and durable shopping bags that are sold in our shop.
The bags are made in social workshops in Germany, and part of the proceeds go back to Mexico. In this way, we support the production and further training of the craftsmen there and help to safeguard this craft.
Storage: Less Inventory, More Sustainability
We intentionally keep our stock low because we focus on sustainable production. Instead of producing large quantities in advance, we only manufacture what is truly needed. This approach helps us:
- Avoid overproduction and waste.
- Minimize resource consumption with less energy and space use.
- Stay flexible and responsive to market changes without excess stock.
Our sustainable approach ensures products are created responsibly, reducing waste and environmental impact.

Recycling is not always green
Not everything that is recycled is automatically environmentally friendly. Recycling reduces waste, but often involves high energy and resource consumption. The preparation and processing of materials requires large amounts of energy, electricity and chemical additives, which often make the process economically uninteresting and environmentally damaging.
For us, sustainability means creating long-lasting products that don't need to be replaced quickly. By focusing on durability, traditional craftsmanship and efficient use of resources , we reduce waste not only in the short term, but in the long term - and at the same time contribute to preserving cultural heritage and social responsibility.
Our espadrilles combine culture, quality and sustainable thinking – for less waste, more awareness and a more sustainable future.
PS: It should not be forgotten that in Europe we take for granted many things that are a challenge in other parts of the world. In Mexico, for example, people have to protect themselves from hurricanes for days at a time several times a year without knowing whether their workshop will still be standing afterwards. The supply of materials and electricity is by no means as secure there as it is here. In addition, there are unpredictable factors such as less reliable workers and a generally less predictable business environment. All of this makes our work on site all the more valuable - and underlines why we want to support this craft and its people.
